Driving in Serbia: the eight rules visitors get wrong

Stefan Vuković · 14 Jun 2026

Headlights, tolls, the vignette question, and what the police actually ask for at a roadside check. Short, practical, and current for 2026.

Dipped headlights are mandatory day and night, all year. It is the single most common fine our customers pick up, and it costs more than a tank of fuel.

There is no vignette in Serbia. Motorways are tolled by barrier — take the ticket, pay on exit. Every car we rent has an ETC tag in the windscreen, so you can use the electronic lanes and we bill the tolls at cost.

Alcohol limit is 0.03%, which in practice means none. It is 0.00% for drivers with less than a year of licence.

At a roadside check the officer wants the licence, the vehicle registration (in the glovebox, in a green folder) and the green card. All three live in the car; you never need to bring copies.

Winter tyres are required from 1 November to 1 April on roads with snow. We fit them at no charge — it is not an extra on your invoice.

Cross-border to Montenegro, Bosnia and the EU is allowed with a €35 permit arranged in advance. Kosovo requires separate insurance bought at the border.

Speed cameras are fixed and well signposted; average-speed sections exist on the E-75. Fines arrive to us and we pass them on with the ticket attached, never with a markup.

Parking in Novi Sad is zoned and paid by SMS. Zone 1 is the centre, one hour maximum. Our city garage is free for customers on rental days.
